A Promotor is a substance that improves the activity of a catalyst without being catalytically active itself. Promoters have a supporting effect by increasing the efficiency or selectivity of a chemical reaction. They are an important component of many industrial processes in which catalysts are used.
function of a promoter
- Improving catalyst performance: Increases the reaction rate or lowers the activation energy required.
- Increasing selectivity: Promotes the formation of a desired product and reduces side reactions.
- Stabilization of the catalyst: Prevents deactivation of the catalyst due to heat, pressure or contamination.
- Optimization of the interface: Changes the physical or chemical properties of the catalyst, e.g. by increasing the active surface area.
