Tonsil® CO 614 G – Refining/purifying of technical and edible oils
Tonsil® CO 614 G is a granulated, acid-activated montmorillonite (bleaching earth) characterized by a large specific surface area and good porosity; it effectively absorbs impurities

In the industrial production of edible oil, the free fatty acids of the raw oil must be removed. This is achieved either through alkaline refining, in which fatty acids are removed with dilute alkalis, or through physical refining, in which the fatty acids are removed by distillation. After a washing and drying step, the adsorbent Tonsil® Optimum 210 FF or Tonsil CO 614 G, with its very high specific surface area, is added to further purify the edible oils. This adsorbent binds colorants, thus optically brightening the oils and removing traces of heavy metals and phosphatides. In this way, the Tonsil® additives ensure compliance with the high quality requirements for edible oil with regard to color, taste, and shelf life.
Transformer oil is an electrically insulating oil that remains stable at higher temperatures and does not self-ignite. It is used in high-voltage technology in transformers, capacitors, and switches for insulation and spark suppression, in tap changers for lubrication, and in power electronics for cooling. To ensure dielectric strength and dehumidification, the oil must be reconditioned at specific maintenance intervals, i.e., filtered, degassed, and dehumidified. For deep cleaning or regeneration of the transformer oil, bleaching earths, such as Tonsil® CO 614 G or Tonsil Regenerator 1, are used.
