Catalytic reforming using acid catalysis

Catalytic reforming using acid catalysis is applied in the refinery and petrochemical industries to convert hydrocarbon feedstocks into higher-value products. Key applications include increasing the octane rating of gasoline components and producing aromatic and branched hydrocarbons that serve as valuable intermediates for downstream petrochemical processes.

The process is implemented in reforming, FCC, and isomerization units, where solid acid catalysts based on zeolitic materials are employed. Owing to their defined pore structure, high thermal stability, and adjustable acidity, zeolites allow precise control of acid-catalyzed reactions such as isomerization, cyclization, and alkylation. When combined with metal functions, bifunctional catalysts are formed that efficiently promote both acidic and metal-catalyzed reaction steps.

The targeted selection of suitable zeolites improves selectivity, yield, and catalyst service life. Acid-catalytic reforming therefore plays a crucial role in enhancing process efficiency and optimizing modern refinery and petrochemical operations.
