Fat hardening metal soaps

Fully hydrogenated fats are an important product in the oleochemical industry. They can be produced via two processes:

  • Splitting of triglycerides into glycerin and unsaturated free fatty acids
  • Full hydrogenation of unsaturated triglycerides

Our nickel catalysts for the production of fully hydrogenated free fatty acids can be applied in both processes. Our experts are available to support the optimization of your hydrogenation processes.

In the first process, which includes the splitting of triglycerides, nickel soap is formed as an undesired by-product. This can lead to catalyst deactivation. For this reason, C&CS offers a specialized nickel catalyst that partially impedes formation of nickel soap and represents a suitable catalyst selection for this process.

In the full hydrogenation of triglycerides followed by splitting, a less pure product is obtained, and small amounts of nickel soaps may form. These can, however, be removed after hydrogenation by citric acid treatment.

The encapsulated nickel catalysts from C&CS show good performance in both processes and can be supplied regularly in partial deliveries to the production site.
