Nuclear safety encompasses all measures, procedures, and technical provisions designed to protect people, the environment, and assets from risks associated with the use of nuclear energy. It is a critical aspect of nuclear power plants, research facilities, the handling of radioactive materials, and the transport and storage of nuclear substances.
A key element of nuclear safety is the reliable removal of radioactive contaminants from ventilation and off-gas streams. In particular, the separation of radioactive iodine species is essential, as these compounds may be released during normal operation or in incident scenarios. Iodine adsorbers are therefore widely used in air treatment and off-gas filtration systems in nuclear facilities.
C&CS offers iodine adsorbers specifically developed for nuclear safety applications. The adsorbent materials contain silver compounds (Ag) supported on suitable carrier materials, such as acid-resistant substrates, providing high chemical reactivity toward iodine. Technical studies have demonstrated very high iodine removal efficiencies, making these iodine adsorbers proven and reliable components for ventilation and off-gas filtration systems in the nuclear industry.
