Packed areas for flow distribution

Flow distribution packings: In fixed-bed reactors, a layer of inert material spheres is used to ensure a uniform flow from top to bottom over the catalyst bed. The flow resistance of the packing and the gas passage through the spaces between the spheres facilitate mixing of the gas and a uniform flow over the underlying catalyst layer. For hydrogen production at higher temperatures, for example, for the flow over the high-temperature shift catalyst ShiftMax 120 HCF, the inert material CS 346, consisting of pure Al₂O₃ spheres, is used. At lower temperatures, for example, for the flow over the hydrodesulfurization catalyst HDMax 200, the SiO₂-based material CS 346 can be used.2-Al2O3 spheres are used in the existing inert material CS 222.
