Solid-state polycondensation (SSP) is a post-polymerization process used in the PET and PTA industry to increase the molecular weight of PET compounds through controlled heating under vacuum or in an inert gas atmosphere (e.g., nitrogen, N₂). SSP processes are applied both in the production of PET chips, PET resins, and polyester resins, as well as in PET recycling.
During PET and PTA production, the inert gases used in the SSP process (commonly nitrogen, N₂) become contaminated during the thermal post-treatment of plastic raw materials with VOCs and other organic compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, glycols, and oligomers.
