Hydrogenation to alcohols in oxoalcohol process chains involves converting oxoaldehydes, derived from hydroformylation, into the corresponding primary alcohols. In this process, aldehydes, typically obtained from olefins and synthesis gas (CO/H₂), are almost completely hydrogenated to oxoalcohols using hydrogen and fixed-bed catalysts. Key products include n-butanol, 2-ethylhexanol, isononanol, and other higher-chain oxoalcohols, which are widely used as plasticizers, solvents, and intermediates in plastics, coatings, and specialty chemicals.
R–CHO + H₂ → R–CH₂OH
(Aldehyde → Alcohol)
Nickel- and copper-based hydrogenation catalysts are predominantly employed for oxoalcohol production, sometimes in combination with precious metal systems. Recommended catalysts for hydrogenation to alcohols, especially oxoalcohols, include:
• NiSat series: Nickel-based catalysts (NiO/SiO₂/Al₂O₃) with high activity and selectivity for aldehyde hydrogenation, suitable for both fixed-bed and slurry processes.
• HyMax: Copper chromite catalysts with excellent acid stability, ideal for selective liquid-phase hydrogenation of aldehydes, ketones, and esters in oxo and fine chemical applications.
• HyFlex Cobalt: Selected cobalt-based catalysts from the HyFlex series, designed as base or precious metal catalysts for hydrogenation reactions such as the production of amines and oxoalcohols.
These catalysts provide high conversion rates, excellent selectivity, long service life, and stable process conditions for modern oxoalcohol plants. They are particularly suitable for applications in plasticizer production, solvent manufacturing, polymer precursors, and fine and specialty chemicals.
