Activated alumina

Activated alumina is used in industrial applications for moisture control and the removal of acidic gases. Typical areas of application include gas processing, compressed air drying, chemical processes, and PSA systems for oxygen generation, where stable adsorption performance is required.

Activated alumina offers high mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and hydrothermal stability. It can be used at temperatures up to 300 °C and under fluctuating pressure conditions. Its pore structure enables the diffusion and adsorption of water, with a water uptake of up to 25 wt.% at moderate humidity.

Regeneration is possible by heating to 120–300 °C or by vacuum regeneration. Activated alumina retains its adsorption capacity over multiple regeneration cycles and can therefore be reused repeatedly in industrial processes. Support in designing suitable operating and regeneration conditions is available.

Typical applications include the drying of compressed air and gases, the removal of acidic gases such as HF, HCl, and SO₂, and its use as an adsorbent or filter in chemical processes, including offshore applications and chemical plants.
