Application areas
Methanol synthesis:Copper-based catalysts, often in combination with zinc oxide (ZnO) and aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), are considered the industry standard for the synthesis of methanol from synthesis gas (CO, CO₂, and H₂). The reaction takes place at moderate temperatures (approximately 200–300°C), with copper catalyzing the hydrogenation of CO and CO₂ to methanol.
Water-Gas Shift Reaction (Low-Temperature Shift):Copper catalysts are used in the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction (200°C–250°C) to convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, producing hydrogen in the process. They complement iron oxide-based catalysts, which operate at higher temperatures.
Hydrogenation:Copper catalysts are also used in hydrogenation reactions to reduce aldehydes, ketones, or nitro compounds to alcohols or amines. They are particularly effective in the hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons and carbonyl compounds because they are selective and operate under mild conditions.
CO₂ Reduction:Our copper catalysts play a key role in reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) to usable fuels such as methane (CH₄) or methanol. This is particularly relevant in the context of carbon capture and utilization (CCU).
